What to wear on a glacier hike in Iceland

The essentials — what to wear
- Hiking boots (mandatory) — waterproof, above the ankle, with a stiff sole so crampons attach. Trainers and soft shoes aren’t allowed. Most operators rent boots if needed.
- Base layer — merino or synthetic thermal top and bottoms. No cotton.
- Mid layer — a fleece or light down jacket for warmth.
- Waterproof shell — a windproof, waterproof jacket and over-trousers. Iceland’s weather turns fast.
- Warm hat & gloves — even in summer the ice is cold and windy.
- Sunglasses & sunscreen — glare off the ice is strong on bright days.
What to bring in your pack
What NOT to wear
- Jeans or cotton — they soak through and stay cold and wet.
- Trainers, sandals or soft shoes — crampons won’t fit and you’ll be turned away.
- Bulky scarves or loose straps — anything that can catch.
No hiking boots? Don’t buy a pair just for this. Almost every operator rents proper glacier boots for a small fee — add it when you book, or ask at check-in.
Summer vs winter clothing
In summer the principle is the same but you can go lighter on the mid layer — still bring the waterproof shell, gloves and hat, because wind on the ice is cold regardless of the date. In winter, add a heavier insulating layer, thicker gloves and warm socks, and expect to need everything you brought. See the best time to hike.
Book a hike (gear included)
Crampons, harness, ice axe and helmet are provided on every tour — you just turn up dressed for the weather. Boot rental is usually an easy add-on.
